We created an environment full of opportunities for learning.
Our classroom is equipped with authentic Montessori materials that are beautifully organized in lower shelves, ready for the child to use them at any time. In this environment, the child is free to move, to choose her own activities, and work independently at her own pace.
Our academic program focuses on preparing the child to read and write.
So, we work with phonics everyday. We often connect our phonics work with other areas of the classroom, such as science and math. For instance, when learning the letter S and its sound, we may talk about the solar system, the sun, and the stars, because they all begin with the same /s/ sound. We may also learn about spheres, because it is the shape of the planets and it also begins with /s/. Because the child during this early period of development has an absorbent mind, she takes in everything. Indeed, she is learning all the time.
We teach the fundamentals of math in a hands-on approach.
The Montessori math materials are precise and help the child have a sensorial experience of quantity, shapes, sizes, patterns, space, and one on one correspondence. She also assimilates in a concrete form the concept of the decimal system. We then gradually move on to the math shelves, where the child learns the quantities, the symbols, the names, and the writing of numbers.
We study our planet and everything in it.
We study the earth, the continents, and its landforms. We work with puzzle maps of each continent and learn about its animals, people, and traditions.
